Need a tutor?

If you are struggling academically, you may find that you could first benefit from some assistance with your overall learning strategies. (See Study Tips in this section or visit the SSC Program tabs). If you need assistance comprehending the content of a course, the following resources will help you find a tutor.

Options for locating a tutor:

  1. Contact the Office of Minority Affairs in the Black Cultural Center or any of the tutorial centers that offer free tutoring.
  2. Contact the department of the course you are taking to see if tutorial services are available.
  3. Visit your instructor during his/her office hours to discuss your performance in the course and ask if he/she can recommend any students who may be interested in private tutoring.

You know you need some help, but not necessarily all of the time. You could give one of the tutorial centers a try. Many of them offer walk-in help on a case by case basis.

Black Cultural Center

Black Cultural Center pictureThe Center offers free tutoring to all students at UT on a first come, first served basis, so you are encouraged to sign up early in the semester. You can get tutoring in a variety of basic subjects, such as math, science and business.

Chemistry Tutorial Center

Chemistry Tutorial CenterThe Chemistry Tutorial Center provides free tutoring to students enrolled in chemistry courses. The Center is located in 513 Buehler Hall and can be reached at 974-3413. They have irregular hours throughout the term, so be sure to call to see when they are open.

Educational Advancement Program

The Educational Advancement Program is a service offered to undergraduate students who meet two of the following criteria: first generation college student, low income student, underrepresented minority student, or physically challenged student. For those that qualify, free tutoring is offered through the program in a variety of subjects.

Math Tutorial Center

Math Tutorial CenterThe Center provides UT students with free help on math assignments for courses within and outside the Math Department. The staff can help you with most 100 or 200 level math courses. Please make sure to come to the Center with questions about your assignment because the Center is not a study lounge. Also, the Center's staff are not geniuses but will try to help you to the best of their abilities. Finally, remember that the Center is busiest between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM, so when you come for some help, you may have to wait a little while.

Physics Tutorial Center

This Center is new to UT, having opened in the winter of 2004. The staff will help you with lower level undergraduate physics courses. Please make sure to come to the Center with questions about your assignment because the Center is not a study lounge. Since a staff member works with you one-on-one, you may be asked to leave without having all of your questions answered if the Center is near capacity.

The Stat Lab

Thornton CenterThe Stat Lab is located in the Commons (hours are Mon-Thur 9:00-4:00). The lab is staffed by two people during those hours and students can work on problems and get program help.

Thornton Center

Thornton CenterThe Thornton Center is a comprehensive academic support center providing tutorial services to student athletes. However, you do have to be a UT athlete to take advantage of the services.

Writing Center

Writing CenterThe Center provides UT students free, individualized help on all written assignments. For each session in the Center, you will be paired with a trained tutor (a graduate student or instructor from the English Department). He or she will help you brainstorm ideas, structure your paper, or polish the final draft among other things. However, he or she won't proofread or edit your work. Instead he or she will offer you constructive feedback intended to help you become more comfortable with writing while improving your writing skills.

Departmental Tutorial Services(to see a list, click here. Please disable pop-up blockers.)

We have a list of the tutoring services available on campus listed by department. Take a look at it. See if tutoring is offered by the department from which you are taking the class you need help in. But remember, many of these services charge a fee.
