Course Withdrawal Appeals

If you fail to attend the first class meeting of a course without prior arrangements with the department concerned, you may lose your space in class to another student. Failure to attend a course is not an official withdrawal and will result in the assignment of an F grade. You should not assume that you will be officially dropped from the class. It is always your responsibility to drop courses you do not plan to attend, which your professor has told you he/she will drop for you, or for which you have been told to drop. See key semester dates here.

Types of withdrawal requests:

  • Never Attended (previous semester) – may be made through your Advising Center for courses you never attended through the last day of the semester following the semester of enrollment. For example, you were registered for a course in fall semester 2006. You may request a Never Attended withdrawal through the last day of spring semester 2007 through your college Advising Center.
  • Retroactive (includes never attended more than one semester previous) – may be made through the Student Success Center by submitting a Retroactive Individual Course Withdrawal application.
  • Total term withdrawal – undergraduate students who need to leave the university before a term is finished must apply for withdrawal in the Office of the University Registrar. See more information here.
    • Requests for term withdrawal for the current term are routinely approved when the student applies by the deadline listed (last day of classes.)
    • Requests for term withdrawal for a prior term should be addressed to the Office of the University Registrar, 209 Student Services Building, Knoxville, Tennessee 37996
  • Partial withdrawal – undergraduate students who wish to apply for withdrawal from one or more courses for a particular prior term (but not the entire semester) may do so by completing the Retroactive Individual Course Withdrawal application.

Please note that requests for Never Attended, Retroactive Withdrawal, and Prior term Total Withdrawals are exceptions to university policy, and as such are not automatically granted.
