Supplemental Instruction
SI Details
Overview
Developed by Deanna C. Martin, Ph.D. at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1973, Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support program that target historically difficult courses. SI offers regularly scheduled , out-of-class review sessions to all students enrolled in the targeted course. Assistance begins during the first week of the term before students encounter academic difficulty. SI sessions are facilitated by SI Leaders, students who have previously and successfully completed the course.
How SI works
You are attending a course that we offer supplemental instruction for. This is announced in the course during the first week and is open to all students. Since all SI sessions are voluntary and normally occur near the classroom the course is taught in, you decide to give it a try. Each session is facilitated by an SI Leader, a student who has successfully completed the course in a previous semester. You might see him/her in your course since he/she is required to attend all class meetings, take notes, and read all assigned material. This means he/she will be familiar with the course materials and lecture topics. In the SI session, you will develop study strategies for note taking, graphic organization, questioning techniques, vocabulary acquisition, and test preparation as you review course material with your classmates and the SI Leader. You attend the sessions regularly each week and in the end, find out you did well in the course.
