First Year Studies
Welcome to the University of Tennessee, Class of 2012!
We recognize that starting college is a period of significant adjustments—personally, socially, and academically. To facilitate your successful transition into the university and provide a strong foundation for your academic and personal success, we offer a number of small, discussion-based seminars. These First Year Studies courses are designed to make the university more personal through close interaction with your instructor and fellow students. Be sure to register for a FYS course at summer orientation!
First Year Studies 101: The UT Experience is a one-credit course designed to ease your transition to UT and assist you in developing strategies for success in college and in life beyond college. Course topics include campus resources and involvement, managing time and money, study skills, and major and career planning. Courses are taught by an instructor and a student who serves as a peer mentor (link to new peer mentor text). (link to the current FYS page with revisions)
First Year Studies 129: Freshman Seminar is a one-credit academic seminar that encourages the exchange of ideas between professors and students. Each section focuses on a different topic based on the professors’ interest. (link to http://web.utk.edu/~froshsem/)
“FYS 101 helped me greatly with my first semester of college. It taught me where to go when I need help with anything from finding a book to coping with stress. I know how to study better, can cope better with exam stress, and know how to manage my time. I am very glad I took the class, and I hope all freshmen will take it!”
