Frequently Used Tools:

Early Alert Program

Student success at the University of Tennessee is defined as graduation. In an effort to increase students’ successful course completion and progress to graduation, the university created the Early Alert Program in 2005. The web-based academic progress reporting system provides a tool for students and university academic support persons to request feedback and advice from faculty concerning students’ academic performance in a course.

How Early Alert Works

  1. Students register for Early Alert or are registered by a university academic support person affiliated with a specific student support program.
  2. At two points in the semester, faculty/instructors are asked to provide performance data and advice, via the web-based system, for those students who are registered for Early Alert.
  3. Early Alert registered students and university academic support persons view faculty/instructor feedback in the web-based system.
  4. Based on Early Alert information provided by the faculty/instructors, academic support persons can help students access appropriate resources and reposition for academic success.

Purpose

Early Alert aims to:

  • provide students with feedback concerning their overall, comprehensive performance in a course(s), in a way that individual grades do not always convey,
  • provide students with suggestions/strategies for their improvement in individual courses (e.g. class attendance, completion of assignments, individual conference with instructor, etc.) ;
  • provide student performance data to administrators/academic advisors/counselors who are monitoring/mentoring students enrolled in specific programs;
  • provide the administrator/academic advisor/counselor the opportunity to help students access resources for academic success (tutoring, supplemental instruction, conference with instructor, time management, and study skills) and reposition for academic success; and
  • enable the university to better identify and intervene with at-risk students at an earlier point.

info to know
  • Requests for feedback are sent to instructors at two points in the semester.
