Academic Review and Dismissal
On academic probation?
At the close of each semester, your academic record will be reviewed to verify your grade point average and determine your academic standing. Academic standing is determined using both semester and cumulative grade point averages (GPAs). Good academic standing (term and cumulative grade point averages of 2.0 or better) is required for remaining enrolled at the university, and students must achieve good academic standing in order to graduate.
If your cumulative GPA falls below the minimum acceptable level of 2.0 or your semester GPA falls below a 2.0 for two consecutive semesters, you will be placed on Academic Probation for your next term. Being placed on Academic Probation is a warning that your academic performance needs improvement, and that you are in jeopardy of Academic Dismissal.
During the semester you are on Academic Probation and any other semesters in Academic Probation, you must participate in a special directive advising program to help you address concerns that are impacting your academic performance, and to outline a plan for achieving academic success. In addition, you may be required to participate in an Academic Success Workshop.
While in Academic Probation status, you will be dismissed at the end of the term if both:
- Your cumulative GPA is below a 2.00, and
- Your term GPA is below a 2.00
You will no longer be on academic probation when your cumulative GPA is 2.00 or higher and your term GPA is 2.00 or higher.
What next?
If you have just been placed on Academic Probation, first contact your advisor. He or she is your best and most valuable resource for information. Most colleges operate a special advising program for students on academic probation.
With your advisor, you will develop a plan to return to good academic standing. Your advisor can help you clarify your goals, objectives, interests, and abilities to ensure that you are on the right track. Your advisor can also help you take advantage of the many resources available on campus.
Each college has trained faculty and staff advisors to guide you back to Good Standing. It is your responsibility to contact an advisor. Communication is key!
Scholarship Information
Do you have scholarships, such as the HOPE/TELS Scholarship? If you are on academic probation, you are at risk of losing your scholarship. It is important for you to talk to your academic advisor as soon as possible to figure out a plan to bring up your GPA and get off academic probation. It is also important for you to touch base with the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships to find out what requirements are necessary for your particular scholarship.
