What is academic advising?

Academic advising has many definitions. Advising is teaching. Advising is major and career advice. Advising is a process of mapping out graduation requirements. Most importantly, advising is a relationship between you and your academic advisor where you receive guidance regarding your academic plans at the University of Tennessee.

All UT students participate in academic advising. Here is how advising at UT works: Any student who has earned less than 30 credit hours at UT (transfers too) or is on Academic Review must meet with an advisor each semester to be cleared for registration for the following semester (hint: we suggest students make appointments during the first two months of the semester). After a student has earned 30 hours and has a 2.0 or higher GPA, he/she will meet with an advisor once an academic year (hint: we suggest students meet with their advisors at least once each semester).
