Declaring, Changing, and/or Progressing Into Your Major: UT Requirements (2009/2010 catalog)
Progression Requirements Defined: Progression requirements are usually based upon attaining a minimum grade point average, sometimes in a maximum number of hours earned. In addition, grades earned are often based upon certain courses.
Retention / Maintenance Standards Defined: Some majors require students to maintain a certain minimum grade point average in order to continue in the major. Additionally, certain courses may require a grade not lower than a C in order to count towards degree requirements.

- Application and portfolio required.
- Architecture - 2.3 grade point average by the end of 32 hours
- Interior Design - 2.0 grade point average in major courses.
- 2.0 grade point average for all majors not listed below.
- Anthropology – 2.5 grade point average in Anthropology courses except for 3.0 in Anth 110 or 117, 120 or 127, 130 or 137 with none being below a C.
- All Fine Arts majors require a portfolio review.
- Music – audition and theory examination.
- 2.75 grade point average (3.0 for Accounting) by completion of 75 hours in:
- Math 125, 123 or 141-142
- Communication Studies 210 or 240
- English 255, 295
- Accounting 200
- Economics 201
- Statistics 201
- Business Administration 201
- Communication Studies or Journalism and Electronic Media - completion of 30 hours including Communication and Information 150, with 2.5 grade point average.
- Advertising or Public Relations – 2.75 grade point average after first-year curriculum in these majors.
- 2.0 grade point average with fewer than 30 hours.
- Transfer students with greater than 30 hours – 2.3 grade point average.
- Teacher Education – 2.7 grade point average in 60 hours for Elementary Education or Early Development and Learning (PreK-K);
- 45 hours for Agriculture Education) in 60 hours for Elementary Education or Early Development and Learning (PreK-K); 45 hours for Agriculture Education, Music Education, and Special Education; 75 hours for Secondary Education; and 90 hours for Early Childhood Education (PreK-3). See Advising Services Office for specific courses required.
- Child and Family Studies – 2.5 grade point average (2.7 for CFS 472 practicum option); minimum of C in all child and family studies courses.
- Exercise Science – 2.5 grade point average after 45 hours and completion of Exercise Science 100, Chemistry 100, and Physics 221.
- Sport Management – 2.5 grade point average in 30 hours; completion of Sport Management 100 and 250 with grade of C or better; completion of English 101 and 102, and Math 125 or 141.
- Hotel, Restaurant, and Tourism – 2.3 grade point average in 30 hours; grade of C or better in all
hotel, restaurant, and tourism prefix courses; completion of English 101 and 102, and Math 125; completion of 300 post-secondary school hours of industry related work.
- Retail and Consumer Science – 2.3 grade point average in 30 hours; grade of C or better in all retail and consumer sciences prefix courses; completion of English 101 and 102, and Math 125; completion of 300 post-secondary school hours of industry related work.
- Students who wish to pursue a degree in the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, but do not meet the Success Prediction Indicator criterion may enroll as University Undecided students and complete appropriate mathematics, science, and other courses before applying for admission to the College of Engineering.
- Students admitted into the College of Nursing must (1) maintain full-time study at UTK and (2) achieve a minimum 3.2 grade point average at the conclusion of all lower division requirements (65 hours) in order to begin upper-division nursing coursework. In addition, admitted students must meet specified health requirements and criminal background check prior to starting clinical coursework. Failure to uphold these requirements will make a student ineligible to progress to upper-division nursing coursework.
- Students not admitted directly into the Nursing major may enroll as University Undecided. These students will have the opportunity to apply for an open position in the upper-division nursing courses during the spring semester of their sophomore year. Selection of applicants is competitive, and the opportunity to transfer into the major is not assured.
- Social Work 200 and 250 with a grade of C or better
- Be in good academic standing
- Have fulfilled most lower-division and General Education course requirements.
